Immersive language learning: what actually works at work
2/3/2026 • Pédagogie

Immersion is often reduced to a VR headset. That framing is wrong: immersion is first a matter of situation, not hardware.
Three conditions for useful immersion
- A recognisable situation. Learners must recognise their job: a pharmacy counter, a service desk, a team meeting.
- A stake. Without a clear communication goal, the conversation turns into a drill.
- A consequence. What the other person answers must depend on what was said.
The right medium at the right moment
- Web fits supervised practice, in training rooms or at the workstation.
- Mobile captures short windows, often the only ones available.
- Virtual reality adds social load: eye contact, distance, noise. It is valuable for customer facing roles.
What does not work
Decorative immersion, where the scenery changes but the dialogue stays scripted, produces no progress. Neither does two intense weeks followed by nothing: regularity beats intensity.
Measure differently
The right indicator is not time spent but the number of successful speaking turns across different situations. That is what a catalog structured by sector and goal makes possible.
